Focus.

"And thus Hezekiah did throughout all Judah; and he did what was good, right, and true before the Lord his God" (2Chronicles 31:20). Right actions--did what was good, right, and true. Right motivation-- "...before the Lord his God". Good reminder to me of what I should focus on and why--do what is right before the Lord (not to please men).

Merry Christmas

I want to wish all of my facebook friends a very Merry Christmas. To My Hungarian friends, Boldog karácsonyt! Jesus told His disciples, "Let not your heart be troubled, you believe in God, believe also in me...I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me" (John 14:1,6).

Whose Approval do I Love?

Many of the rulers in Jesus' day were silently supportive of Jesus, "...they were not confessing Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the approval of men rather than the approval of God" Jn.12:42-43. As we gather with family and friends to celebrate Christmas may we sensitively, yet boldly declare that Jesus is the reason for the season. I hope and pray that I will never love the approval of men rather than the approval of God.

Warning.

Solemn warning in Malachi 4:1-2, "the day is coming...and all the arrogant and every evildoer will be chaff...But for you who fear My name the sun of righteousness will rise with healing it its wings..." Here the danger of rebellion against God prompts us to ask--"Am I guilty?" The delight coming to those who fear God gives courage to face life's current difficulties.

A Great King

"...for I am a Great King, says the Lord of hosts, and My name is feared among the nations" (Malachi 1:14). "The most important thing about a person is their concept of God." The Lord is a Great King and feared among the nations, but in my eyes is He truly Great? Is He truly feared? What do my actions reveal about my attitude towards God? The priests in Malachi's day offered blind, lame, and sick animals for sacrifice instead of offering their best to God. They were despising God's very being by their worthless, half-hearted sacrificing. They were going through the motions, but their hearts were not in it. I wonder if that is not the way many of us are going through this Christmas season. Sort of "doing the religious stuff" out of duty but not in sincere devotion. Maybe we need to hit the "pause" button and stop to reflect on this Great God we serve and what a wonderful, marvelous, merciful thing it was that He sent His Son. If He is truly a Great King then He deserves our very best.

Caution against Stone Throwing.

Most of us find it easy to find fault in others but to overlook our own sin. In John Chapter 8 Jesus gives us a glimpse of His mercy...the mercy Scripture elsewhere calls on us to "love" (Micah 6:8). To those who brought the woman caught in sin and demanded that she be stoned Jesus said, "He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her" (Jn.8:7b). Nobody did. Better think twice before I pick up any stones.

Whose Glory am I seeking?

Jesus was defending His own teaching which baffled the people because He was not formally educated, but He spoke with authority. When he said, "He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the one who sent Him, He is true..." (John7:18) He declared that He was seeking the glory of His Heavenly Father. His words prompted the question in my mind, "Am I speaking from myself and seeking my glory or God's?"

What are you going to eat this Christmas?

I'm sure that for most of us the eating has begun. We usually start "packing it away" beginning with Thanksgiving and continue on through New Years. As for me, I'm just salivating over the thought of my wife's Kringla--the sweetness of a cookie and the texture of bread. I'm convinced they will be a staple in glory :). I have a rather discriminating palate when it comes to Christmas goodies. Don't want to waste my caloric intake on just anything. Chocolate anything is good--but particularly dark chocolate. Tea rolls, cinnamon rolls, poppyseed bread, pumpkin bread, ham, roast beef, mashed potatoes--all favorites of mine. When I say I'm discriminating it does not mean I'm a picky eater--I like most everything. But I'm also aware that my metabolic rate is slowing and I don't need as many calories. So what will you eat this Christmas? You might not realize it, but the scripture actually gives us some guidance on this question. Of course, the guidance has to do with spiritual nourishment and not gratifying our physical palate. I read John 6 this morning and what a wonderful reminder of what our Christmas diet should look like. After Jesus had fed the 5,000 with five loaves and two fishes, they were impressed with his power, but more intrigued by their full bellies. Typical human beings given to self-gratification think first of their gut, of filling their stomachs. An intriguing look at human nature that so easily by-passes God's display of power that should inspire awe and focuses on self-gratification. Jesus left the crowds, but they pursued Him and Jesus tells us why, "you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves, and were filled" (John 6:26). Jesus turned their thoughts to the eternal not merely temporal. For that culture bread represented their staple food, the supply of their need for sustenance. Jesus directed the crowd to look beyond the immediate and work for the food that "endures to eternal life" (6:27). What does Jesus tell them they need to eat? "Jesus said, 'I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall not hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.'" John 6:35. True satisfaction of our spiritual hunger and the thirst of our soul is only found through belief in Christ. Only belief in Christ will satisfy us eternally. Jesus directs us to "Feast on Himself" and by that He is NOT advocating cannibalism, but speaking in spiritual terms He is saying that those who believe (turn from their self-directed life of sin and truly trust Christ for the forgiveness of sin) will be eternally satisfied/saved. How do I know that Jesus is speaking about eternal satisfaction/life? Read John 6:40 "For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him, may have eternal life; and I Myself will raise Him up on the last day." Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift.

Trust in the Lord

Some interesting drama as I read through the Old Testament story of the various Kings of Israel and Judah. In 2Chronicles 14-15 King Asa turns out to be a man who truly trusts in the Lord. He sought the Lord when he was up against a formidable army twice his size. He humbly prayed for God's help and "The Lord routed the Ethiopians (2Chron.14:12). God wonderfully delivered and the nation prospered under his leadership. In chapter 15 the prophet Azariah came and warned that they should seek the Lord and if they did so they would find Him (enjoy God's presence and blessing). So the people entered a covenant, a commitment to seek the Lord and they enjoyed revival. Unfortunately, Asa turned his trust away from the Lord in Chapter 16 and decided to trust the King of Aram instead of the King of Kings. As expected things did NOT go well when he turned his eyes away from the Lord. A great reminder to us that the Lord really is to be trusted. "For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that tHe may strongly support those whose heart is completely His" 2Chron.16:9.

Wise Men Still Seek HIm.

God's word to His people in the O.T. "The Lord is with you when you are with Him. And if you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you" (2Chron.15:2). N.T. version "Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with Me" (Rev.3:20). I've been thinking this Christmas season about whether or not I'm giving the Lord the relationship He desires from me? Am I seeking Him. It is true, "Wise Men Still Seek Him."

What is Christmas all about?

"Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and rise again from the dead the third day; and that repentance for forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in His name to all the nations..." Luke 24:46-47a. This is the reason for the season.I hope we don't lose sight of why Jesus came while we are focused on remembering the actual event.

More on the Love of God

"For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments, and His commandments are not burdensome" (1Jn.5:3).

The Love of God

I've been listening to some wonderful Christmas music these days and the weather is certainly reminding me that it is that time of year when we celebrate Christmas. A week ago many were frantically looking over the advertisements from many retail stores to plan their strategy for "Black Friday" shopping that has spilled over onto Thanksgiving day--many stores opened at 6 pm last Thursday. With so many things to distract us from why we actually celebrate Christmas I was blessed to be reminded this morning of what Christmas is all about. "In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him" 1Jn.4:9. What a wonderful summary of why we celebrate Christmas. I hope to spend some time meditating on the Love of God manifest in sending His Son so that we might live through Him. Now that is the greatest present ever given at Christmas--the chance to live eternally through faith in Christ. Let us sing it, shout it, state it, and praise God for this gift of love that makes life possible.

Advent Perspective

"We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren" (1Jn.3:16). This verse sent my mind in two different directions. First of all, whenever I doubt God's love because the circumstances of life overwhelm me I have this anchor for my soul--The Love of God is ultimately seen in the sending of His Son. Secondly, as a follower of Christ I am called to give my life for "the brethren" and that means sacrifice. The Christian life is NOT easy, NOT about my comfort, NOT about me. Helpful perspective for me this Advent Season.

"Black Friday perspective"

Happy Thanksgiving . On the verge of "Black Friday" Jesus' words provide a fitting perspective. "do not be anxious for your life, as to what you shall eat; nor your body, as to what you shall put on...But seek for His kingdom...for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also" (Lk.12:22,31,34).

Love Mercy

In Micah 6:8 the prophet called upon the people to "do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with their God." Powerful challenge to treat people with justice (treat others fairly); to love mercy (treat others kindly when they don't deserve it); and to walk humbly (to serve willingly). It's pretty natural for us to demand justice--to insist that we be treated fairly. But it is supernatural for us to demonstrate justice, mercy, and humility. Micah 6:8 calls us to live completely counter to our self-centered natural inclinations. We want to be treated justly, but often neglect to deal with others fairly. We desire to receive mercy--not getting the punishment we deserve, but we are arrogantly reluctant to extend mercy to those we are certain do not deserve it. We long to be recognized and appreciated, but struggle to take a back seat, serve, and let others receive the credit. Lord, work in my heart today to put you first and think about my own actions towards others rather than their actions towards me. Teach me to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly.

Rejoice in this...

I love the story of Luke 10 and Jesus sending out the disciples on a short-term ministry trip. The interaction at the end of the trip is so fitting for this Thanksgiving week. The disciples come back all "juiced up" over the fact that "even the demons are subject to us in Your name" (Lk.10:17). After all that God was doing the disciples were focused on the power they had. Jesus gave them some much needed perspective when He said, "Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven" (Lk.10:20). As we approach Thanksgiving I find this reminder so fitting. Can I spend some time focusing on the marvelous mercy of God in sending His son to die on the cross so that I could have my name written in the book of life? What a blessing to be the recipient of God's grace and to be one of His children.

Love Mercy.

Jonah knew that God was merciful so he ran away from Ninevah. When he finally showed up God proved compassionate and Jonah didn't like it. God gave Jonah a lesson in mercy. Jesus, likewise calls us to "be merciful just as your Father is merciful" (Lk.6:36). When I think of the mercy I have experienced from God it is a motivator to express mercy towards others. When I forget how God has extended His mercy towards me it is easy to become judgmental of others. It is really a twisted sense of pride that allows me to self-righteously and inappropriately judge others while basking in the mercy God has given to me. Lord, help me reflect more seriously on your mercy in my life so that I more consistently extend that mercy towards others.

What motivates our Obedience?

In Luke 4 Jesus was lead into the wilderness where He was tempted 3 times and three times he resisted by quoting Scripture. One thing that strikes me is that the Son's love for the Father was manifest through his resistance of temptation to act in ways contrary to the Father's words (Jesus quoted the Old Testament--predominately Deuteronomy as grounds for resisting Satan). Jesus obeyed out of devotion, not duty; out of love, not legalism. May our love for the Father grow to the point that our obedience is driven by true devotion as well.

Spiraling Out of Control

It is easy to lament the moral degeneracy in our society and for good reason. Dishonesty, immorality, and corruption are just a few of the indicators of our departure from virtue. I'm pretty good at identifying the culprits, the "ring leaders" of moral decline and then lambasting them. The Lord has used His word to challenge my knee jerk reactions. First of all, Scripture commands us to "hate evil and love good" (Amos 5:15; Ro.12:9). I'm pretty good at hating other people's evil and self-righteously loving my "own comparative good." Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure these verses are a command to "start with myself." For me to hate evil and turn from it in my own life personally and to love what is good, by pursuing it. Secondly, there is the matter of GRACE--unmerited favor/kindness. Jesus said, "Blessed are those who mourn..." (Mt.5:3). They mourn over their own sin and the sin they see around them. Do I mourn for either? Do I pray for repentance in my life and in the lives of others...that I will turn from sin and so will those I'm quick to vilify? What if I began to pray more consistently for those whose actions offend me? I cannot and should not ignore the downward spiral of morality. Neither am I bound to remain silent in the face of gross degeneracy, but I hope to react with greater integrity.

Talking before Thinking

If I were to pick one disciple that I feel that I most closely resemble my initial pick would be Peter because of his impetuous nature. I seem to share a proclivity to speak first and think later which means that I find myself removing my foot from my proverbial mouth more often than I would like. Fact is that we speak out of that which fills our heart (Mt.12:34)so any mistakes in speech are really a reflection of what is on my heart. So the following verse is a good one for me to keep always on my mind. "Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips. Do not incline my heart to any evil thing, to practice deeds of wickedness" (Psalm 141:3-4). A fitting prayer to start the day.

Everywhere that I go, God is there.

"Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your Presence?" (Ps.139:7). The Psalmist's rhetorical questions are definitively answered in the ensuing verses. We cannot escape God's presence. This reality is cause for both reverence and relief. We cannot hide our wickedness from the Lord which should stir us to obedience. We are always in the presence of the Lord which should provide us with great comfort.

"Fight the Good Fight"

I'm sure that with a title like I've chosen many will be thinking that I'm going to comment on 2Timothy 4:7 where Paul says, "I have fought the good fight. Well, I am....sort of. Paul fought the good fight of faith and was near the end of his life when he wrote to Timothy. His example and words are certainly an encouragement for every believer to stay faithful in their ministry. And it is this faithfulness in ministry that I was struck with this morning as I was reading an article that appeared in Christianity Today. There are two things I was struck by as I read the article. First of all, the faithfulness of many people in proclaiming Christ as the answer to the needs of a particular person. Secondly, I was touched by God's relentless pursuit of people. God asks us to work while He works. Indeed, Peter is correct that believers are a people of God's own possession to proclaim the excellencies of Him who called us out of darkness and into His marvelous light (1Pet.2:9). As many people were faithful in fighting the good fight of faith by sharing the truth of Christ with Kirsten Powers (Fox News Contributor, The Daily Beast) God did His work in her as well. I found myself encouraged by the faithfulness and boldness of many believers in her life sharing the truth about Christ. There was a pastor who was faithfully proclaiming the truths of Christianity and relentlessly pointing people to Christ. This is evangelism as it is suppose to be. Then there was God doing His work drawing Kirsten to Himself. How easily we tend to "write certain people off" as unredeemable, as unreachable, as impossible. God is the God of the impossible. Finally, I applaud Kirsten's courage to speak out publicly about her faith. It was courageous for those who shared Christ with her, but for her to face the anti-god establishment in which she has been so intertwined for many years requires monumental courage. Her is the link to the article. This link will take you to an abbreviated article. scroll down to the "read entire article" bold words and click on them to read the entire article. I've read both. I'd recommend that you read the entire article first. http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2013/november/fox-news-highly-reluctant-jesus-follower-kirsten-powers.html?paging=off

Help in these times of tumult.

The past couple of days I've been reeling from all of the information coming out about the new health care law. I feel my personal and religious liberty being violated by all of the mandates. I feel the economic realities of higher premiums and higher deductibles. I feel angry that the deceptions around the law keep being perpetuated. It is unaffordable, unnecessary unworkable, and unwanted by the majority of Americans. And when I think about the fact that those people most directly responsible for the enactment of Obama Care (The President of the United States, The Congress and their staffs, the Unions) are NOT forced to be subject to it I find myself very angry. The height of hypocrisy is to push something as in the best interest of the people, to sing the praises of "better care at a lower price" (which is simply NOT true), and to demand implementation of a law the impact of which these people are intentionally and purposefully able to avoid because of their power and privilege is upsetting. In fact, the only people guaranteed to keep their current health care plans and their doctors are the President, Congress and their staffs, and ALL Federal Employees who are able to take part in their own special health care system not available to the rest of the people. The Federal Employee Health Benefit Plan is an entity all it's own that is highly subsidized by taxpayers and as far as I can tell after the incorrectly labelled "Affordable Care Act" was passed, the President and the Secretary of HHS went in and unilaterally changed certain provisions so that the President, Members of Congress and their staffs would be free to remain on the FEHBP or if they wanted to enter the "exchanges" they could do so. Additionally, certain powerful unions have also been granted special provisions so that their health care plans do not have to comply with the ACA as it is written. They too can keep their current plans and doctors. I find it quite offensive that with our individual family policy that we are forced to pay for maternity coverage, contraceptives, abortion services, mental health examinations, all pre-existing conditions, and a host of other provisions that we have chosen NOT to include in our health insurance over the years. We are now forced to pay for some things that violate our conscience and are contrary to our Christian beliefs. In the swirl of this and many other disturbing events on the local, national, and international scene these words bring me needed perspective. "Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth" Psalm 124:8.

What to do in Difficult Days.

Paul told Timothy that "in the last days difficult times would come" (2Tim.3:1) and he would find himself on a sea of corruption and compromise. The descriptions given in verses 1-11 of 2Timothy 3 are eerily familiar as men today are "lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving...without self-control, haters of good...lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God..." In this toxic environment Paul promises Timothy and every person who seeks to live godly in Christ Jesus that we will be persecuted (2Tim.3:12). The solution Paul offered to dealing with a wicked and worsening world is timeless truth, "You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of...the sacred writings which are able to give you wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus" (2Tim.3:14-15). He punctuates the priority of God's Word in the familiar close to the chapter in verses 16-17. To be thoroughly equipped for every good work when the world is wicked, the man/woman of God needs to stay connected to the WORD of GOD.

Focus!

"I will lift my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? It comes from the Lord" (Psalm 120:1) "Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead...this is my gospel" (2Tim.2:8). Two very good reminders to me that I need to keep my eyes fixed on my true source of protection, provision, and pardon during these tumultuous days.

Remembering Others in Our Prayers

"I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience the way my forefathers did, as I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day" (2Tim.1:3). Paul's words to Timothy remind me of the importance to remember others in my prayers on a consistent basis. How very encouraging it must have been for Timothy to know of Paul's constant concern for him. I want to express and experience that encouragement.

The Worth of the Word

Reading through Psalm 119 there is so much to grasp, but the prominence of God's Word is hard to miss. One thing that impresses me is the Psalmists love of God's Word. He wants to observe God's law and keep it will all his heart (vs.34). He trusts in God's Word (vs.42). He loves God's law (vs.97), it is a lamp to his feet and light to his path (vs.105) and he wants his footsteps established in God's word (vs.133). These are just a few of the ideas communicated about God's word. I'm struck by how the Psalmist wants to be taught by, learn from, rest in, be revived by, and follow God's word. He meditates on it all day (vs.97)and it makes him "wiser than my enemies" (vs.98) and it's taste is "sweeter than honey..." (vs.103). I think if we are honest the Psalmists interest in and love for God's word far surpasses our own, but it certainly provides us with an example to follow and gives us many sincere prayers to pray. Oh that we would learn the worth of the Word from the Psalmist and begin to make his statements our prayers. Today I was especially struck by Psalm 119:133 "Establish my footsteps in Thy word, and do not let any iniquity have dominion over me."

God Cares.

So neat to see the Lord speak from His word what is needed at the time. Yesterday I was aware that several things could become sources of anxiety for me and I simply said, "Give me what is needed today." "The Lord is for me, I will not fear; What can man do to me? ...It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man" (Ps.118:6,8). Life is NOT all about me, but God does indeed care about what is happening in the daily lives of His children and for that I am very thankful.

Grateful for God's Mercy

"...that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all" (1Tim.1:15b). Paul shows me that Reflecting on the extent of my own sinfulness brings into clearer view the magnitude of God's mercy in saving me.

Cure for Ailing America

In Daniel's day, his nation suffered because of their abandonment of God. In lamenting their 70 years in captivity he truthfully states, "...all this calamity has come on us; yet we have not sought the favor of the Lord our God by turning from our iniquity and giving attention to Your truth" (Daniel 9:13). The demise of any nation can be traced back to their abandonment of God. Daniel offers the remedy for what ails America. 1. Turn from our iniquity. 2. Start living out the truth of God's Word. Take your pick from any list of poisons plaguing America today--Pride, Dishonesty, Corruption, Deception, Extortion, Stealing, Laziness, Abortion, normalization of Homosexuality, Break down of the nuclear family, divorce, drug abuse, alcoholism, greed, materialism, teen pregnancy, pornography, poverty, racism, failure for individuals to take personal responsibility for their actions and their own provisions, a growing entitlement mentality, considering humans no better than any other created thing, murder, terrorism, and the list could go on. Bottom line is that each of these maladies has it's origin in the sinful heart of man. The further we get away from God and the truths of His word the closer to our own demise we come. The explanation for our challenges as a country rests squarely on our spiritual anemia. I'm not sure who said it, but I believe it is true, "If America ceases to be great, it is because America ceases to be Godly." This is not only true of America. It was true for Israel in Daniel's day. It is true for any nation today. Time to wake up to the fact that we are indeed running counter to God and His Word, admit our sinfulness and cry out to God for forgiveness. This begins with individuals turning from their sin and trusting Christ who died to pay the price we deserve so that we could be forgiven and and gain new life. As new creatures (2Cor.5;17) BELIEVERS have turned and continue to turn from their sin and seek to live according to God's Word. What America needs. What the world needs is a revival. Only when people are totally surrendered to God because they trusting Christ to save them from their sin will they have the power to live consistently according to His word, to deny self, to overcome greed, lust, jealousy, pride, etc. Only in Christ will we see all men and women created equal so that human life has dignity whereby we refuse to take innocent life in the womb or treat others as inferior because of the color of their skin. Life in society submitting to the will of God as outlined in his word is a society that lives in harmony. That is only possible if the individuals are personally reconciled to God through faith in Christ. It begins with each of us turning from our rebellious, self-directed life and trusting Christ's death in our place and then living in constant submission to God's Word. It begins with us praying for God to work mightily to forgive our sins, to convict those who sin, to turn people around and towards Him. It begins with us taking an active role in defending the truth and speaking against the lies of the enemy which is often times contrary to the politically correct thinking of the influencers of society.

Courage NOT to Compromise

1 Kings 22 is one of my favorite stories of courage that doesn't compromise. The prophet Micaiah was called before two kings where 400 prophets were telling the monarchs to go to war. The messenger told Micaiah, "Please let your word be like the word of one of them and speak favorably" (verse13). No doubt with his life hanging in the balance the prophet said, "...what the Lord says to me, that I will speak" (vs.14) and that is exactly what he did. I'm inspired by this example to speak the truth of God's word at a time when there is increasing pressure to tell people what they want to hear.I can't imagine the pressure Micaiah must have felt as he encountered the ranting prophets all telling the kings to go to war and that they would experience victory. Micaiah was the lone voice prophesying defeat. In fact, He was so bold as to tell the kings that the Lord revealed to him that a deceiving spirit was speaking through the mouths of the other prophets. Micaiah set an example to follow. Regardless of the consequences or the pressure to compromise speaking what God has said is the path to follow. Lord, I only ask for courage not to compromise as Micaiah had.

Excel Still More!

"...as you received from us instructions as to how you ought to walk and please God (just as you actually do walk), that you excel still more" (1Thess.4:1). Challenged this morning to consider the life God has called me to live--how I ought to walk based on God's word--and to excel still more. Not in a rigid or legalistic sense but out of Love for all that God has done for me in Christ. Trusting that "He who began a good work will perfect it until the Day of Christ."

Perspective!

Was praying for some perspective from the Word as I woke up this morning and this is what the Lord gave me. First of all, I read 1 Kings 20 where evil king Benhadad of Aram came out to fight the King of Israel (Ahab). Long story short is that the Arameans far outnumbered the Israelites, but God worked mightily on behalf of His people to defeat a much larger army. Point I took away was that despite the overwhelming odds against God's people, the Lord is still sovereignly and powerfully in control to protect His people. Even in our current desperate condition as a country with Christianity under fire, we can rest assured that God is in Control and working for our good. Then Psalm 104-105 both testimonies of God's great work on behalf of His people. God is in control :). "Glory in His Holy name; Let the heart of those who seek the Lord be glad. Seek the Lord and His strength; Seek His face continually" (Ps.105:3-4). Then I read Daniel 6. Daniel was so upright and blessed by God that his peers among the wise men of Babylon were jealous and sought to discredit him. They could find NO ground for accusation and no corruption in Him. So they sought to force him to compromise his religious convictions by forbidding the worship of any god or person other than king Darius. When Daniel knew the decree was set, he ignored the consequences and continued to bow down towards Jerusalem three times a day in prayer. He was caught and sentenced to the lions den. His courage to stand firm on his convictions knowing he would have to face the adverse consequences is encouragement to me and to every believer in the face of increasingly hostile conditions. Christians are under increasing pressure to compromise and our religious freedoms are under assault. Daniel provides a fitting role model and God's protection of Him is encouraging as well. A little perspective for my day.

Do I Receive it As the Word of God?

"...we constantly thank God that when you received from us the word of God's message, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God which also performs its work in you who believe" (1Thess.2:13). Does God's word "perform its work in me?" Do I receive it for what it truly is and not as the word of men?

Imitators of Christ?

Paul was praising the church at Thessalonica, "constantly bearing in mind your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ...you also became imitators of us and of the Lord...you became an example to all the believers...For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you..." (1Thess. 1:3-8). Challenged by what would be necessary for these same compliments to be given to the church I'm apart of? Am I personally embodying what Paul is praising?

What am I devoted to?

"Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving" (Col.4:2). It is too easy to forge ahead in life in our own strength failing to realize just how much we need the Lord. Paul's words here are a good challenge to me, to devote myself to something that really does make a difference and to do so gratefully anticipating that God will work.

Guard Our Minds

I remember one of the few times my father actually wrote me a note while I was in college. In the text of the letter my dad referred to this verse. "See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ" (Col.2:8). What a fitting warning to any student today, and especially to those studying at our public institutions. But this warning is not just for students. Paul writing to a church assaulted by those trying to turn them away from the truth penned these word which are just as fitting today. So many who follow Christ are being lead astray by worldly philosophies, deception, and the traditions of men. At every turn society is trying to mold and shape our values, priorities, and sensibilities. We are bombarded with the lies that say your physical appearance is what defines you, success is measured in terms of how much money you make, look out for yourself first, honesty and hard work are for losers, if you are economically worse off than others then those wealthier than you "OWE" you something, individuals aren't responsible for meeting their own needs or for their actions, it doesn't really matter what you believe about God, sin, death, or hell; freedom of speech no longer applies if you condemn homosexuality, abortion, immorality, dishonesty, corruption, and/or stealing. These are some of the destructive philosophies permeating our culture. There are many more that are contrary to Scripture. Think for example of the impact of Darwinian evolution and secular humanism. These ideologies and belief systems have stripped humankind of their God given uniqueness as the pinnacle of creation. Under these systems man is no better than any other creatures. This mentality justifies such atrocities as abortion, euthanasia, the holocaust. The foundation of the "Environmental movement" and the "animal activist" movements is a fundamental denial of the God-created distinction between man and the rest of creation. If we are, as God has stated, "Created in His image to rule and subdue the earth" then much of what we are being told today is absolutely in conflict with Scripture. Sadly, the idea that man is created in the image of God distinct from the rest of creation as a being designed to impact his/her is completely at odds with much of the social welfare system. When we reward people for NOT working and punish people who do work by stealing what they earn and give it to other people we are stripping human beings of their God-given dignity. God gave us work before the fall so that it is not a curse, but something that we do as image bearers. After the fall it is much more difficult, but work is NOT a curse. When will we see that able-bodied individuals are created with ingenuity, creativity, and energy for making a difference in society. Whatever system we impose that suppresses our God-given image dehumanizes us. I could continue down this road of contrasting current social engineering with Biblical teaching, but the point I want to make is that Paul's warning is so very important today. Both inside and outside the church Christians are inundated with erroneous ideas of what the Bible truly teaches. Only as we "See to it that no one takes us captive" will we truly be free. May we commit ourselves to be "transformed by the renewing of our minds" (Ro.12:2), pray for discernment, and learn to look for the faulty assumptions behind what the world tells us.

Expectation of Change

"...the gospel...is constantly bearing fruit and inceasing, even as it has been doing in you also since the day you heard of it and understood the grace of God in truth" (Col.1:5-6). Paul commends the Colossians because the gospel was transforming their lives. God's truth when truly implanted in our lives grows; it changes us. There should be an expectation of change in my life as a believer and in the lives of all who call themselves followers of Christ. It is a sobering thought to realize that the natural course of life as a believer is one of growth in Christlikeness, of bearing fruit and "increasing." Sure, there are times when our zeal for the Lord waxes and wanes, when we lapse into fits of futility but as a general trajectory the life of a believer is moving in a Godward direction. This has implications in the church where we often excuse someone for just "being cantakerous", or gossiping, or unfriendly. Seriously??? We should not excuse those who say they have been Christians for a long period of time with NO measurable difference in their lives. Yes, I know we are not the ultimate judges of people's spiritual condition, but we are to judge ourselves and others. A living tree that produces no fruit is a contradiction. Best to begin with looking at my own life to see if there is genuine evidence of progress.

Comparison or Contentment?

We live in a society that feeds on comparison and competition so that contentment becomes a rare commodity. We have all seen someone else's new car, pickup, or tractor. We have witnessed others who are not as athletic playing while others more talented sit on the bench. We have all been over to a friends new or newly remodeled home. We've heard about a friend who received a generous scholarship to attend school or a young couple whose parent's bought them a new home. We have all been in situations where we look with comparison or competition on another person and feel a nagging sense of discontent. Paul's words in Philippians 4 give some much needed guidance and encouragement to those struggling with contentment. "...for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstance I am...I can do all things through Him who strengthens me" (Phil. 4:11,13).

When the Wicked Seem to Prosper...then what?

Easy to look at all of the evidence of the wicked prospering in their ways and rejoicing in pride over the righteous and then to despair. We are living in days when "evil is called good and good is called evil" and it can be disheartening. Psalm 94 brings perspective and I find strength in verse 19-- "When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your consolations delight my soul." There are some other encouraging words found in Psalm 94 for those of us beaten by the rise of wickedness. It's a good read.

Listening to the World or the Word?

The world says "look out for #1". The WORD says, "...let each of you regard one another as more important than himself; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others" (Phil.2:3b-4). What a better world we would have if people listened to the WORD.

Walk as Children of the Light

"Walk as children of the light...trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord" (Eph.5:8,10). In these tumultuous days it is tempting to just "do what comes natural", to "live for self" but Paul challenges believers to live in a way opposite of the world. With the darkness (ways of the world) pressing in upon us Paul's reminder is timely. May the world see the Light of Christ in us.

Preaching Christ

In these days of consternation in Washington D.C. and serious unrest in the country I was reminded this morning by the apostle Paul of a couple of things when I read Ephesians 3. First of all, Paul was a prisoner of Christ--imprisoned because of his commitment to Christ. When I consider that there are nearly 200 cities/municipalities in the U.S. that have currently enacted legislation that makes it a crime to speak about homosexuality as the Bible does, it is very disconcerting. It means that in ordinary conversations those who declare on the basis of their moral convictions that same-sex marriage or relationships are wrong will be held in violation of a law. The first amendment seems to be thrown out in such cases. Let alone if a pastor enters a pulpit and publicly declares what the Bible says about what has been euphemistically labeled an "alternate lifestyle". To speak ill of homosexuality in these municipalities is not considered free speech, but a 'hate crime.' Christians need to wake up to the fact that Paul was imprisoned for his faith and if we are going to be true to the teachings of the Bible we are not far behind him. Secondly, Paul got to the heart of the ills plaguing the U.S. and the world--Godlessness and rejection of Christ. Paul understood that by the grace of God he had been called to "preach the unfathomable riches of Christ" (Eph.3:8). It is the unfathomable riches of Christ that so many need today. The forces of evil at work in the world are trying to loosen us from our moral underpinnings and are at war with Christianity. The only real answer is that "people need the Lord." May we not only be faithful to proclaim the gospel, but may we become increasingly intentional and zealous in showing God's love and sharing the truth of God's Word.

A Gift.

""For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is a gift of God, not as a result of works, that no one should boast" (Eph.2:8-9). Have you received the gift? If you have received it, do you rejoice in it?

Sons of God

Encouraged this morning by the reminder that we are children of God by means of faith in Christ and that alone. God marvelously works in us to bring us to Himself and for that we should be so very grateful. "For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus" (Gal.3:26). "Not because of what I've done, but because of Who You are; not because of who I am, but because of What You've done."

What are You Wearing Today?

And now as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, PUT on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another..." (Col.3:12). Loving others is a conscious choice on our part to clothe ourselves with godliness which is empowered by the Holy Spirit. Time to check our wardrobe.

Being Rich

Riches can be defined by what we possess, but more importantly by WHO possesses us-- "For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich" (2Cor.8:9). When a person is saved by Grace through faith in Christ he/she becomes infinitely wealthy with an inheritance that is eternal (1Peter 1:3-5)--forgiveness of sins, eternity with God in heaven, and enjoyment of His richest blessings forever.

Counting My Blessings

Another Gorgeous day here, all of our children (including our new daughter-in-law) all under one roof, and a great reminder from God's Word about our abilities, talents, opportunities, and the ministry God gives us-- "Not that we are adequate to consider anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God" (2Cor.3:5). So much to praise God for.

Grateful that I'm Saved By Grace

"But to the one who does NOT work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is reckoned as righteousness" (Ro.4:5). Rejoicing that right standing before God is not a work I do, but a work God does in those who believe.

Victory in Jesus

Thinking of a friend who just lost his 52 year old wife as I read 1Corinthians 15:57-- "but thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."

The Idea of Love is Easier than Actually Loving

Love is a concept that most of us understand in theory, but when we start to look at what it really means up close and personal, it can be disturbing. "Love is patient," but we tend to joke about or dismiss our quick temper. "Love is kind", but am I? "Love is NOT jealous", so why are we so often resentful of other people's possessions, opportunities, talents, looks, influence, and success? "Love does NOT brag and is not arrogant", but we often side with Dizzy Dean who said, "It ain't braggin' if you done it." Is not my criticism of others a subtle way of praising myself? Lots to ponder just in these first few descriptions of love from 1Corinthians 13:4-7.

To God Be the Glory

"Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God" (1Cor.10:31). So much I can't control in life, but I can make a conscious effort to bring God glory in whatever I do. Asking the Lord for grace to bring Him glory.

Bringing Glory to God with Our Body.

Paul writing to the believers in Corinth issued a sobering and strategic reminder. "Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body" (1Cor.6:19-20). Father teach us to consider our ways and act so that we will bring glory to you.

Perspective in a Narcissistic Culture

In a day when so many are drawing attention to themselves, attempting to make so much of their looks, abilities, possessions, and popularity, Paul gives some much needed perspective. "For who regards you as superior? And what do you have that yo did not receive? But if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it" (1Cor.4:7)?

Thursday, August 29, 2013

My Job and God's Job

"I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth" (1Cor.3:6) is not an excuse for passivity in ministry, but an encouraging perspective. Each of us does the work God calls us to do and He produces the growth. Results are not my job or your job, but God's job. Faithful service is what we are called to.

Boast in the Lord

"Let Him who boasts, boast in the Lord" (1Cor.1:31). Not in our accomplishments, not in our achievements, not in our intelligence, looks, abilities, stuff, but in the Lord--what He has done in delivering us from the domain of darkness.

Freedom in Christ

Most of us are well aware of "our rights". It seems to me that after years of feeling suppressed by legalistic expectations, many believers today are acutely aware of their freedom in Christ even to the point of "flaunting" those freedoms. Paul's words in Romans 14 are a good reminder that not everyone shares the same freedom in "what they eat, drink, or in what days they observe. Paul's admonition is NOT, "just do whatever God gives you freedom to do and don't worry about others." Paul says, "...determine this--not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother's way...pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another" (Ro.14:13,19). If I love other believers I willingly limit the exercise of my freedoms for their sake. Just because we have the freedom to go certain places, drink certain beverages, engage in certain activities on a certain day as a believer doesn't mean that we should. Paul is clear that if the exercise of my freedom hurts a brother/sister in Christ then I am "no longer walking according to love" (Ro.14:15). If I need to forsake my Liberty for the sake of Love that is what God has called me to.

Courage

"Be strong and let your heart take courage all you who hope in the Lord" (Ps.31:24). Lots happening in the world and in our lives personally to discourage us and distract us from focusing on the true source of hope. The turmoil in the middle east with nerve gas used in Syria, revolution in Egypt, arms escalation in Iran, and unrest in Afghanistan, Iraq, and a host of other countries is daunting. The seemingly unceasing stream of scandals coming out of Washington D.C. these days where corruption, deception, and abomination are in full display, yet justice never seems to come to the culprits could bring despair. Serious Economic hardship with wages decreasing, prices increasing, unemployment escalating, health care costs and regulations skyrocketing, buying power eroding, and prospect of recovery waning can bring disillusionment. Not to mention the discouragement that the physical challenges, emotional struggles, and interpersonal conflicts bring our way. Psalm 31:24 brings A needed reminder for me as to where my real hope is... "in the Lord."

David and Goliath

When we read the familiar story of David and Goliath in 1Samuel 17 it seems that most people focus on the magnitude of David's faith. Yes, David did have great faith in God and there is a challenge in this text for us to trust God, but the basis for that trust and the main thrust is God's Sovereignty. David's confidence was that the God who delivered the bear and lion over to him would also deliver this Philistine who taunted God. David came, "In the Name of the Lord of Hosts" (45) whom David claimed would give the victory, "that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel...for the battle is the Lord's" (46-47a). The purpose of David's victory was to bring God glory. While David's faith is important, it is God's sovereign control over the events of life that is preeminent. Lord, help me to realize your sovereignty and live each day to bring you glory.

Faith Comes By Hearing.

I had a conversation with a man at his kitchen table who had been hearing the gospel message for several days in a Bible study he was in. He confided in me, "I want to believe, but I can't right now." Before I left I encouraged him to stay involved in a Bible study because I told him that faith comes by means of hearing the Word. "Whoever will call upon the name of the Lord will be saved. How shall they call upon Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent...So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of Christ" (Ro.10:13-15a,17). Guess we best be sharing the Word with people.

Need Direction?

"Who is the man who fears the Lord? He will instruct him in the way he should choose" (Ps.25:12). Refreshing promise to God's children that we can count on His direction.

Giving as We have been Given to.

To give as Christ gave to me is to give without regard to the response of those to whom I give. "Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift" (2Cor.9:15).

Peace With God

So many people live with a gnawing sense of uneasiness, an agitation of the soul, a subconscious (or sometimes a conscious) awareness that there is just NO true peace in their life. We are masters at trying to medicate this emptiness and uneasiness. Humans turn to alcohol, cigarettes, or other addictive drugs. We try to find peace through the pursuit of pleasure--entertainment, sensuality, thrill-seeking, adventure, exotic vacations and other hedonistic activities. Some believe that money, possessions, having the right "toys" and wearing the "right" clothes will "do the trick." Many find causes that they can pour their energies into--politics, social justice, preserving the environment, etc.,. But all of these efforts--most of them detrimental, but certainly not all--miss the mark, they fail to get to the root of the problem in our soul. As fallen creatures we are sinful by nature and in practice and that means we are automatically objects of God's wrath. There can be no peace, no purpose, no fulfillment, no true contentment as long as the enmity exists between us and God. The difficult thing for us to realize is that there is NOTHING we can do to solve the problem. No amount of good works, medicating through pleasure, pursuing power and/or influence will set things right between us and God and thereby fill the God-sized vacuum in our soul. The glorious thing is that a Holy God made it possible for the animosity between Him and His fallen/sinful creatures to be eliminated. Oh, it was not an easy or free solution. For God's wrath against sin must necessarily be punished or else God is not a God of justice. Paul tells us the path to peace in Romans 5:1. "Therefore, having been justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." True peace--the absence of conflict between us and God--is available only through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. I hope you know that peace. Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift.

Justified by Faith

"But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is reckoned as righteousness" (Romans 4:5). I am so grateful to God that right standing before Him is not because of who I am or what I've done, but comes to those who believe in Who Jesus is and What He has done.

The Kindness of God

"Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance" (Romans 2:4)? God's kindness, forbearance, and patience in not punishing our sin immediately is intended to reveal the marvel of His mercy and move us to repentance (turning from sin and self in genuine sorrow to trust in the Savior).

Swimming against the current

Increasingly believers in America are finding that their beliefs, practices, and convictions are under assault. The culture seems to be moving towards increased hostility towards Christianity. For example, Students who wear shirts with Christian logos, verses, sayings are being told they can't wear these things. Public Schools are refusing to allow Christian groups to meet on campus for Bible Studies. The new health care law ("Obama Care") forces employers and individuals to pay for insurance coverage for birth control and abortion inducing drugs against their will. So how are believers to handle such growing hostility. There are many things I could suggest, but the one that occupies my thoughts today comes from Psalm 9:10. "And those who know Your Name will put their trust in You, For You, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You". A powerful reminder to those who stand for the truth in these days when the truth of God's Word is under attack as are all those who seek to live by it. God promises that those who follow Him will be vindicated, will see their enemies punished and what is truly right will prevail. Right now when the wicked seem to prosper and the righteous seem to suffer it is very difficult to continue, until we fix our eyes on the Lord and remember that in the end we win.

When Silence is NOT Golden

"For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God..." (Acts 20:27). Paul's words to the elders at Ephesus are a challenge to me in these difficult days when the truth seems rather unpopular. These words of Paul are the reason he gives for what he said in the previous verse, "I am innocent of the blood of all men" (20:26). Because he has faithfully proclaimed the truth he is innocent. Do we see that speaking the truth is a matter of life and death? I don't want people to be condemned because I was silent.

LOVE?

As I think about Tyler and Grace's Wedding (our son and fiance), I think about what love is. Love is NOT a feeling, but a commitment to act better than you feel and to give better than you get.

So Grateful to be God's Child

Thanks to our worship planner, praise team, and all who made the service a blessing yesterday. Thinking this morning about the privilege of being a child of God. Luke tells us in Acts 16:14 about the amazing work that God does in drawing us to His Son. "...and the Lord opened her heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul." So blessed that God opened my heart and praying that He will open yours. "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved..." Acts 16:31. The Best News Ever.

All We Need Is Love.

Jesus told scribe that the greatest command was to Love God with the totality of your being and to love our neighbor as yourself. So I want to ponder the question, "what evidence is there in my life that I love God fully and my neighbor genuinely?" Not that my work will earn me a place in the kingdom of God, but that if I am a child of God the reality of my faith will be evidenced by a growing love for God and others. I find it easier to love God and others theoretically than practically. Where is there "expensive worship" in my daily experience? Where am I extending myself in faith to serve God and others? These are questions that I want to spend some time thinking about today.

Believe and Receive

"Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through Him (Jesus) forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and through Him everyone who believes is justified..." (Acts 11:38-39a). Through the death of Christ forgiveness is extended, but only through personal trust in Him is that forgiveness experienced. What a privilege to proclaim that those who believe in Christ (those who turn from their own self-directed life and trust fully in His death as the payment for sin they deserve) will receive forgiveness. What this world needs more than anything is the forgiveness of Christ.

Leading by Serving

"If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all" (Mk.9:35). Great to see and hear of so many who chose to serve this summer--at Hidden Acres, During VBS, at the Block Party, in Haiti, in Brazil, In Jacksonville, at FCA camp, in Oklahoma, and in Hungary. In about four hours one of our church family will be sharing their testimony in Hungary. As you feel lead, please pray for a mighty work of God in hearts and lives there. Thanks to all who are so faithfully serving.

God Is Near

"Am I a God who is near, declares the Lord, and not a God far off" (Jer.23:23)? YES, God is near and not far off. He is absolutely aware of everything that is going on in our lives, the good and the bad. Jeremiah was rebuking the false prophets who conducted themselves wickedly and acted as if God was oblivious to their sin. God wanted them, and everyone else who arrogantly and mistakenly believes that they can sin without God's knowledge, that nothing escapes His notice. It is also true that God's omnipresence (Always near) is also a source of comfort for those who are hurting, confused, distraught, and discouraged. No matter what problem we face, God is near. May the knowledge of God's nearness motivate us to live godly lives and comfort us in our distress.

Don't Keep Silent

Jesus healed a leper and asked him to "keep it quiet" (Mk.1:44). Healed of his disease the man disregarded Jesus' request and "began to proclaim it freely." I've been healed of the deadly disease of sin, been forgiven and given new life in Christ. I'm not perfect, but I'm pardoned. There is NO better gift I could be given, NO greater reason to rejoice. Will I be as vocal about the eternal health that I've been given as this man was over physical health?

Holy Boldness

After being told, "speak no more in the name of Jesus" (Acts 5:40), the apostles went on their way and they "kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ" (5:42). Last night as Pastor Stepec and I were out praying for folks in our town and we came to a crossroads where we could have headed for home or gone back in a direction we had already been where there were actually people outside. On this very warm summer evening there were very few people out and we had not really had any very good conversations. That was sort of safe in the sense that we didn't have the awkwardness of introducing ourselves and the fear of starting a conversation is gone when nobody is there. I found myself internally pulled to "make for home" and then nudged by the Holy Spirit changed directions and we approached a man working outside. We struck up a conversation and asked the man if there was anything we could be praying for him about. Without hesitating he listed off three things. We visited and then prayed with him right there. I was so glad we stuck with it, but the pull to "bail" was real. I think of the apostles in Acts 5 told not to preach any more in Jesus' name and how they responded in courage. In these days in our country it is becoming increasingly difficult to stand up for our faith. Hostility and aggression towards Christians is increasing. We are going to have to decide if we will join the apostles and "obey God rather than men". Lord, give us the courage to "not be ashamed of the gospel" and to speak the truth even when it is not popular.

Serving the King

Joshua called God's people to "fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and truth...serve the Lord" (Josh.24:14). Joshua then pledged, "but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" (24:15). The people's response, "We also will serve the Lord" (24:18,21,24). In light of all that God has done for us a natural response of love for Him is to serve Him sincerely. I praise the Lord for so many in the church family I am a part of who understand this as they serve the Lord here in their families, in local ministry and overseas. Yesterday I said our last short-term team left for Hungary. I meant our last regularly scheduled short-term team for the summer. Right now a small army of volunteers is conducting Vacation Bible School. I'm sure we will have others going to Haiti yet this year. What a privilege for us to serve the one who saved us.

His Witnesses

The last of the our Church's short-term teams leaves today for Hungary. Two people coming home from Brazil and 9 leaving for Mohacs, Hungary. Exciting times. Praying for them that they will know the power of the Lord to be His witnesses "...in the uttermost parts of the world" (Acts 1:8).

Missing Out

In two days a group of folks from our church plus one good friend of ours from Johnston will comprise a short-term mission team that will leave for southern Hungary to conduct an Evangelistic English Language Camp and a Discipleship Camp. For the first time in 6 years I will NOT be making the trip to Hungary and I am saddened by the fact that I will not be there. I'm not feeling sorry for myself. I'm not begrudging the fact that I will be here. For the past 10 years I have been traveling to the country of Hungary due to the wonderful generosity of our church to lead short-term teams. These trips have been crucial opportunities for evangelism and disciple-making. I have attempted to take with me as many of our existing church leaders as possible, as part of an intentional means of pushing us all beyond our comfort zone and into the world of missions. God has been so wonderful to raise up a team of people each year that is comprised of some "newbies" and some veterans. This mix has been so crucial in perpetuating the disciple-making process in the lives of everyone involved. Something about "serving in the trenches" that calls out the best in folks, that forces us to live out our faith in rich and challenging ways. The bonds that are formed between those of us who go is strengthened in ways that only those who have experienced this sort of ministry can understand. Each year I marvel at how God strategically puts just the right people together to make up the team. Each year my faith is strengthened by seeing God work powerfully to the team together. Sometimes I wish He would work quicker, but He has always been faithful. Ephesians 3:20--'He is able to do far more than we ask or think..." So as I have worked with yet another team that is preparing to go I sit back and I think to myself, "It is going to be so neat to see how God works in and through this team." We have a great mix of young, middle-age, and "not quite old" people going. It will be so great to see youthful enthusiasm tempered by aged wisdom. To see experience mesh with zeal and wreckless abandon. The problem for me is that "I won't be there to experience it first hand." I won't be able to see those young people stepping out boldly to impact their Hungarian peers. I won't see them developing their servant's hearts. I won't see the team members loving each other as a bold testimony to the reality of Christ (Jn.13:35). Oh yes, I know that the trip, the ministry is not about me. I totally get that. I am just being honest about the sadness of "missing out." I don't NEED to be there and the team doesn't NEED me. I will also greatly miss the friends I've made in Hungary whom I have had the privilege to see every year for several years now. There again, seeing them is not necessary, but it is a desire of my heart. As I stay behind and pray for the team, I will be doing so with great enthusiasm, focus, and excitement. I praise God that our church family is so committed to prayerfully and financially supporting the many overseas ministries that we are a part of. I also miss not being able to be with those from our church who have been to Haiti and Brazil this summer. God is working in so many different places. I am so thankful for the privilege to partner with the great folks in God's church here in Albert City to bring the gospel to the world.

Living in Light of His Coming?

Jesus' disciples asked what would be the signs of His return. In His long answer recorded in Matthew 24-25 He offers this sound advice, "Therefore, be on the alert for you do not know which day your Lord is coming" (Mt.24:42; 25:13). I think Jesus was telling His disciples then and now that His return wasn't something they could predict, something they would have precise knowledge about, but there would be indicators. The main thrust of His words are that we need to be living now as if He could return at any time. He may return soon or it may take awhile. Either way we should be prepared and not turn away from living to please Him on a daily basis. Am I living today in a way that I want the Lord to see when He returns?

Swimming against the current

In the book of Joshua we find some challenging words uttered by Caleb, one of the two men who 40 years earlier had gone into the promised land and came back saying, "we should go in." First Caleb declared that despite the fact that most people said, "Do not go in", "I followed the Lord my God fully (Josh.14:8b). Oh, that each of us would follow the Lord fully even if it means going against popular (yet ungodly) opinion.

Not Ashamed!

As our early morning Bible study met today we were discussing Romans 1:16-23. Paul declared, "I am not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes..." (Ro.1:16a). We discussed the fact that all too often we have found ourselves in situations in which we were ashamed of the Gospel/afraid to speak up for Christ. In With high school friends, in family gatherings, in different settings at the university. Paul's affirmation is convicting in light of our wavering. But I also remember that this same Paul who was not ashamed, asked others to pray that he would have boldness (Eph.6:19). I can certainly relate to that. As I walk around our town on Wednesday evenings this Summer praying for and interacting with various individuals in what we are calling our "Summer of Sharing" I find myself hesitating, withdrawing, and I need constantly to be reminded to step out in faith and not to be ashamed of the Gospel. We have not received as spirit of timidity (2Tim.1:7). Lord, please grant me boldness to proclaim the mystery of the Gospel and forgive me for the times I have been ashamed.

Where do we turn in these troubled times?

Nobody questions whether or not the world is in turmoil, unless they oblivious to life around them. The U.S. economy is sputtering, the middle-east is in political and emotional upheaval, the state of the economy in Europe is shaky, certain world powers are flexing their muscles and other rogue nations are defiantly carrying out dangerous policies that threaten stability and safety in the world. It's all rather unsettling if we are trusting in men. The Psalmist gives some much needed perspective in Psalm 146. "Do not trust in princes, in mortal man in whom their is not salvation...How blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God" (Ps.146:3,5).

Biblical Boasting

"Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his strength, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord...for I delight in these things, declares the Lord" (Jer.9:23-24). The world tells us to find our satisfaction and significance in what we know, our power and position, or our possessions. God says that true significance and satisfaction are found in KNOWING HIM. Lord, help us stop chasing significance and satisfaction in what we know, what we can do, and what we have and look for it in KNOWING YOU.

How's My Serve?

"You know the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. It is not so among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant" (Mt.20:25-26). It's not usually the concept of serving, but being treated like a servant that offends our selfish sensibilities. Lord, show me intentional ways that I can serve my spouse, children, neighbors, co-workers, and my church family.

Giving is from God

We can only give what God has already given to us so that the giver cannot take credit for what is given our giving is not dependent upon the response of the receiver. "Every good and perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights in whom is no variableness or shadow of turning" (James 1:17). Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!

Wake Up America

Jeremiah 5 is a laundry list of sins committed by God's chosen people--injustice, lying, idolatry, indulgence, immorality. "For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously with Me declares the Lord" (Jer.5:11). God's response? "On a nation such as this shall I not avenge Myself" (5:9, 29)? The promise of judgment on the nation because of their entrenched wickedness teaches a sobering principle of God's justice against any nation that rejects Him. Those sins which brought God's punishment are all too prevalent today. Wake Up America.

America the Beautiful, America the Broken

As I write on this beautiful Independence Day in America my heart is heavy with what I see happening in our Country. The blatant anti-Christian, godless sentiment rising in the country is frightening, but should not be surprising. In Jesus' day John the Baptist was imprisoned and beheaded by scoundrels hostile to the truth. Others in that day increased their opposition to the one John announced and crucified an innocent Christ. So news in America of Military training that lists "Evangelical Christians" in the same terror watch list as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Taliban should not be upsetting or surprising, but I confess that it has been unnerving. Health care mandates by the HHS Secretary requiring even Christian based organizations, and institutions as well as family run businesses run by devout Christians (i.e. Hobby Lobby; Chick-filet) to provide health care coverage for their employees that covers contraception and abortion inducing drugs is shocking in the "Land of the Free and Home of the Brave" where religious expression has been a hallmark freedom. Now under penalty of law Hospitals, Colleges, and businesses with religious convictions to the contrary are being forced provide for employees what directly violates their faith or else face exorbitant fines. Then there are two recent Supreme Court rulings that serve to overturn the centuries old definition of marriage, and fly in the face of the will of the majority of people in this country. The SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States) rulings on DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) and California Proposition 8 overturn the will of the majority of people. DOMA was passed overwhelmingly by both houses of Congress and signed by President Clinton. It was the law of the land for over a decade reflecting the will of the people consistent with the constitution. Ironically and disappointingly, the "conservative" Chief Justice was more than willing to do in the case of DOMA what he fought so hard to avoid doing in the case of Obama Care. In Obama care Chief Justice Roberts used "creative" interpretations and understandings to avoid at all costs overturning the unpopular health care law. He "didn't want to legislate from the bench." But in the case of DOMA and Prop 8 where laws were supremely popular and supported by the majority of people He took exactly the opposite stance (I think he was the swing dissenting vote). He was more than willing to "legislate from the bench." These,my friends, are a few of the direct assaults on religious liberty we have seen in this country. But the erosion of liberty is taking place on many fronts. Corruption, deception, fraud, and discrimination is rampant. Fast and Furious, Benghazi, NSA, IRS, all bring to mind horrific scandals where trust in the government and the administration has been seriously compromised. We have been boldly lied to, the facts have been hidden and deceptions perpetrated. Corruption and invasion of privacy and discrimination on grand scales. And the perpetrators of these injustices smugly and insolently look down their noses at those seeking to hold them accountable in what we were promised would be "the most open and transparent administration ever." We are experiencing the exact opposite of what we were promised. Instead of transparency we are experiencing increased tyranny. Talk to small business owners, farmers, coal miners, who suffer under the weight of increasing government regulations which all add costs to the goods and services. Every time we turn around a new law, regulation, or policy expands the intrusion of the government into our private affairs,and/or invades our privacy, and or encourages the misuse of our money, and costs us financially. Never in my life time has the size of government increased so rapidly nor the intrusion into life been so offensive. I never dreamed that I might live to see the demise of America, but now I'm not so sure. We have an administration that chooses to disregard the laws of the land it dislikes (i.e. DOMA, Immigration enforcement) and uses executive orders and policy decisions to by-pass congress to gain increased control over the people. They are trying to strip away 2nd ammendment rights, "mine" for our personal data through phone and email surveilance, and sending out drones in America. I haven't even begun to discuss the mess which is America's foreign policy. I would say that it appears for all practical purposes that we do NOT have a foreign policy, we do NOT support our long-standing allies in the world (especially Israel), and we do NOT take seriously the threat of terrorism. So what is my summary assessment? On this 4th of July... I am Grateful for the Freedoms We Enjoy, Fearful for the Freedoms we are Losing, and Prayerful for a Revival in America. "Know therefore and see that it is evil and bitter For you to forsake the Lord your God..." (Jeremiah 2:19b).

Can't Hide What's in Our Heart

"But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man" (Mt. 15:18). My speech will reveal the condition of my heart. Lord, search my heart to purge the evil so I may speak words of life and not death.

Broken Cisterns

God's harsh words to Israel in Jeremiah 2:13 serve as a fitting indictment against many today. "For My people have committed two evils; They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, to dig for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that hold no water." A profound description of turning from God in self-reliance and trusting in things we think will give us satisfaction and fulfillment, but truly won't--cisterns that are broken and hold no water. What a picture of forsaking God--forsaking the fountain of real living water to dig a well to catch runoff...a well that leaks. Pretty foolish. Lord, help me to examine my life to see if I'm digging any leaking wells.

Those the Lord Notices

I'm challenged by the words of Isaiah 66:1-2. After God declares His absolute and unrivaled majesty-- "Heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool" (mind blowing to think about even though it is figurative, it speaks of How grand and glorious God is)--He then declares, "But to this one I will look, To him who is humble and contrite of spirit and who trembles at My word." How absolutely upside down from the world. Fame, fortune, beauty, wealth, athletic prowess are what people in the world notices. God pays attention to the humble and obedient. A call to root out arrogance and for heartfelt obedience in my life.

A Grand Invitation

We recently received an invitation to our son's wedding from his fiance's parents--his future "in-laws." It is an invitation we will treasure for years to come. Exciting times to be sure. But there is one invitation that each of us is given that far surpasses in value any other invitation we will ever receive. Here is the best invitation we could receive and it comes with the most profound promise. "Come to ME (Jesus speaking), all you who are weary and heavy-laden, and I WILL give you Rest" (Mt.11:28). An invitation to turn from our rebellious self-directed life and trust in Jesus for the forgiveness of our sins. The rest He offers is "Rest for our souls" (Mt.11:29). Real Relief and Real Rest for those who see their need. Oh, how I hope that you will respond to this glorious invitation.

The Cost of Following Christ

"Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves..." (Mt.10:16a). This is not a pretty picture. But the picture in Matthew 10 doesn't improve. "And you will be hated by all on account of My name..." (10:22). But the Lord doesn't leave it there. He reminds us that a disciple is not above his teacher and we all know what happened to Jesus. As we face increasing hostility from the world because of our faith Jesus tells us, "do not fear those those who kill the body, but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Hell." I'm praying for increasing grace and courage to face growing hostility towards my faith.

A Solution for Spiritual Bankruptcy

I was deeply disappointed in both of the Supreme Court rulings that came out yesterday. It appeared to me that while Justice Roberts (I think he was the swing vote) employed all sorts of mental and semantical gymnastics so that He could declare Obama Care constitutional because he didn't want to legislate from the bench, the court yesterday did just the opposite in order to legislate from the bench. The hypocrisy and inconsistency is blatant bold, and dis-heartening. In the case of Obama Care the majority of the people did not think it was beneficial and (in my opinion) there is no way mandating everyone have health insurance or pay a fine, can be constitutionally defended as consistent with the "commerce clause" or be relabeled as a tax. But the court ruled otherwise and against the will of the majority of Americans to avoid "legislating from the bench." Yesterday the court ruled against the will of the overwhelming majority of Americans who supported DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) in 1996. And the Supreme court ruled against the will of the Majority of the people in California who voted for "Proposition 8." So the court had no reservation in "legislating from the bench" on the matter of same-sex marriage. The Supreme court rulings yesterday were a poignant reminder that what ails America is spiritual bankruptcy. The only cure is outlined in Psalm 128:1. "How blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways" (Ps.128:1). For America to survive we need to fear the Lord and walk in His ways. As I think about it, this call to fear and walk uprightly begins with me.

Who is this Guy?

Jesus was asleep in the back of the boat while a storm was raging on the sea (Matthew 8:23-27). I am still baffled by how anyone could be sleeping as the boat was tossing, the waves were crashing over the sides, and a bunch of seasoned fishermen were freaking out screaming at each other to keep bailing water and keep rowing for shore. But Jesus is right there sleeping and the disciples, who had just witnessed him heal a leper, heal a paralytic, heal Peter's mother-in-law, and cast out many demons and heal others (Mt.8:1-17), decided it was time to wake Jesus. "Save us Lord, we are perishing." The situation was desperate. Three rebukes follow that are instructive. 1. Jesus rebukes the disciple's for their lack of faith. Did they not believe that with Jesus with them they were secure? Easy for us to cast stones, but how often are we "freaking out" because the circumstances we find ourselves in seem so perilous, so terrible? Well, maybe that hasn't happened to you yet, but it will. These are the times when what we say we believe is put to the test. 2. Jesus Rebuked the winds and they stopped immediately. Coincidence? No.I live in Iowa and the wind blows all of the time. There is a reason why we have so many wind mills here. Sustained winds of at least 12mph are needed to turn the huge props on these massive wind turbines. The number of days the wind does NOT blow at least 12 mph in a year can be counted on both hands using one finger to mark each day. A raging storm and the wind stopped instantly. That happens only in nature during a tornado or cyclone when the "eye" passes. The storm here did not start up again. This was different. It was divine intervention. 3. He rebuked the sea... "It became perfectly calm." This is a startling statement as it defies all the laws of nature/physics. I've been on a lake when the water was choppy and that movement of the water molecules will continue for several minutes even after the wind dies down. Something supernatural took place and the disciples knew it. Notice that the men were afraid during the storm-- "we are perishing." But they were even more afraid when the storm stopped. "The men marveled saying, What kind of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?" (Mt.8:27). This kind of man is the God-Man, Jesus who is worthy of our praise, adoration, devotion, and worship. Take some time to ponder what sort of man this is who calms the wind and the waves. He is the sort of man who died on the cross to pay for our sins and provide us the opportunity for new life in Him. He is worthy of our trust. I don't know what storms assail you, what trouble confronts you, what hardship faces you, but I know someone who cares and who is worthy of you trust as you walk through the dark valleys.

The Lord is With Us

As I listen to the news I become increasingly upset, angered, disappointed, and disillusioned. How can it be that the American people are being lied to about the events so tragic and historic as our consulate in Benghazi being over run by terrorists and the administration did NOTHING to stop it, nor has anything happened to those who murdered four Americans. How can the Department of Justice and specifically our attorney General arrogantly and consistently lie to Congress about "Fast and Furious", about spying on American people--getting phone and internet messages? How can it be that in tough economic times the President takes a family vacation (one of his nearly 50 vacations while in office) at a cost of $100 million to tax payers? How can it be that the IRS is forced to confess that they were deliberately targeting and discriminating against conservative groups since 2010, that they spent 4 million on a "junket conference" for 2600 employees, that the director who plead the 5th before congress is now collecting pay on a "leave of absence" and now to add egregious insult to injury we find out that $70 million was paid out in bonuses to the very IRS that has acted illegally by bullying conservative groups, has wasted people's money on lavish parties, and has been terribly incompetent in sending 24,000 refund checks to the very same address? In this day when health care costs are skyrocketing, when the promises of Obama Care are unraveling before our very eyes--higher costs, fewer people covered, suppressing hiring of employees many people are facing financial crisis. The cost of goods and services is increasing steadily, the debt is escalating unabated, and Congress continues to focus on things that matter least to the people and does so in ways that may seem politically expedient but confound logic. People in America are NOT stupid. We look around at moral decay, economic collapse, and international chaos and then look at the actions of Congress and see a horrible disconnect. Those folks in Washington are clueless as to what really matters. All of this is quite discouraging to me. For example, most people in America see the economy and national security, strength of our military as primary issues along with energy independence and controlling the national debt. Not a coincidence that all of those top concerns are intricately related. Yet what is Congress consumed with right now? Immigration. Is that an important issue? The American people see it as important primarily with regard to securing the borders--National Security. Immigration reform is one of the least important items on people's minds right now, but it is top concern for Congress. When considering immigration the most important issue to people in the country (like 70-80%) is Border Security. But if we are honest the current immigration bill that passed the Senate has been rushed through, not read, full of holes, and DOES NOT guarantee either border security or the end to illegal immigration. We have a warmed over version of what we had in 1986 with all the same promises and no guarantees. All of this is quite disheartening for people who are thinking Americans. We see that they are playing politics in Washington. Republicans trying to win favor with Hispanics and Democrats hoping to demagogue the Republican in the House who will probably vote it down. Then there is the increasing hostility towards Christianity in the military, the requirements of the Health care bill for payment for abortions, and on and on it goes. So what are we to think? The last counsel Moses gave the children of Israel before entering the promised land is fitting advice for every believer to cling to in the challenges of life. "And the Lord is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you, He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed." Friends will fail us. Family will forsake us. Politicians will disappoint us. As we face the daunting realities of life it is comforting to know that the "Lord is the one who goes ahead of us; He will be with us; He will not fail us or forsake us." I need this wonderful reminder of His powerful presence.

Choose Life.

"I have set before you life and death,...so choose life in order that you may live,...by loving the Lord your God, by obeying HIs voice, and by holding fast to Him; for this is your life..." (Deut.30:19-20). This challenge to O.T. Israel reveals a principle that is true today. Absolute dependence upon the Lord (loving the Lord your God) which results in heartfelt obedience (obeying His voice) is the key to life, to blessing, to knowing God's favor. God does not bless rebellion. Have we chosen life by loving the Lord with all your heart...surrendering your self-directed life and trusting Christ alone? Do we love the Lord and obey Him completely? This is the only way to truly live.

With Whom Does God Dwell?

"For thus says the high and exalted One who lives forever, whose name is Holy, I dwell on a high and holy place, And Also with the contrite and lowly of spirit in order to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite" (Isaiah57:15). God who is Supreme, Majestic, Holy, Transcendent, and Sovereign takes up residence in the Most loft and holy place. He is ABSOLUTELY distinct from fallen man. Yet Amazingly, the text reminds us that He ALSO takes up residence/hangs out with the HUMBLE so He can encourage them, "revive" them. How cool is that? The One who is Exalted is pleased to hang out with those who are lowly. One key to know the powerful presence of Almighty God in our lives is to walk Humbly--unassuming, not demanding, accepting of what God brings, gracious, kind, sensitive, generous. Lord, you are opposed to the proud and dwell with and give grace to the Humble so teach me the way of Humility.

Living Not Just Learning

One of the biggest challenges that believers face is to live out the truth that we know. So much of our Christian experience amounts to the accumulation of knowledge, insight, and understanding. We have radios stations that play Christian music and offer teaching by the most prominent Christian preachers. We have Christian literature galore available to us. We have access to God's Word and study tools on our phones and other electronic devices 24/7. There has never been greater access to the truth of God's Word available to as many people in the world as there is currently and the information is expanding rapidly. The words that I'm writing now are accessible across the globe. With all the information available it is important to ask, "Why does it seem that there so little transformation in the lives of people?" The Psalmist's prayer in Psalm 119:33-34 strikes at the heart of how there can be more consistent transformation. "Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes, and I shall observe it to the end. Give me understanding, that I may observe Your law, and Keep it with all my heart." One of my biggest challenges personally is to apply the truth that I know, to live out my faith on a consistent basis. The Psalmist echoes what is on my heart--a desire to understand God's word so that I will observe it, to know it so I will keep it. Of course this begins with gaining information, but notice that the Psalmist wants God to teach Him and give him understanding. He doesn't just want information, but insight into the Word so that He will observe it. Father, may you teach us the truth and grant us insight and understanding so that we will more consistently observe/keep your word.

Prescription for Ailing America

Isaiah's prescription for ailing Israel is just as appropriate for the decadence, arrogance, and self-indulgence so rampant in society today. Read the newspaper; listen to the radio; or watch the news and scandal, lies, corruption, greed, abuse of power, stealing, and discrimination abound. The answer? "Seek the Lord while He may be found; Call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to the Lord, and He will have compassion on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon" (Isaiah 55:6-7). The important thing for me to remember is that this begins with me, with my repentance, with my turning from sin. Then I can pray that others will also Seek the Lord.

Christmas in June

Christmas in June? I'm not talking giving gifts, but receiving the greatest gift ever given. "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife...she will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for it is He who will save His people from their sins" (Mt.1:20-21). In our world full of conflict, corruption, and confusion what we need most is a SAVIOR. One who will deliver us from the power and penalty of our own sin. "Neither is there salvation in any other for there is no other name under heaven whereby you must be saved" (Acts 4:12). I hope you are trusting Him.

The Price of Pardon

"But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed" (Isaiah 53:5). Rather sobering to ponder the fact that on the cross, Jesus was suffering for the sins of men. The language of Isaiah's prophecy is deliberately graphic. "pierced through...crushed...chastening...scourging" and then in verse 7 of Isaiah 53 we read that "He was oppressed and He was afflicted." The physical suffering and the spiritual separation from the Father were both excruciating. The Lord willingly submitted to these grave injustices so that we might be redeemed. It is good to stop and reflect on all that Christ did so that we could live eternally. Certainly it is humbling. Certainly it is encouraging. A couple of lines from some of my favorite Hymns came to mind in light of these texts. Verses that are humbling and encouraging because of the truth they convey. How great the Father's love for us, how vast beyond all measure; that He would send His only Son to make a wretch His treasure. Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe. Sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow.

Announcing Peace and Pardon

Those who are corrupt and who hold God's people in contempt are temporal--their mockery will end in misery, but God says, "My salvation shall be forever and my righteousness shall not be broken" (Is.51:6). Death and eternal judgment awaits the wicked, but Salvation for those who turn from sin and trust Jesus. That is why God tells us through Isaiah, "How lovely on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, Who announces peace and brings good news of happiness, Who announces salvation..." (Is.52:7). I want to be one of those whose feet are lovely...announcing salvation and I want everyone I know to to escape misery and eternal condemnation because they are at peace with God.

God Still Rules

I'm deeply saddened by the vast number of disturbing scandals rocking the country at this time. Fast and Furious, Benghazi, IRS, NSA, and a host of other horrible examples of dishonesty, dereliction of duty, deception, and decadence. Everywhere we turn it seems that perversion and corruption are on display. Quite often those most directly involved and responsible are the most disdainful towards those who call their indecency, immorality, and illegal activity into question. Aside from the pervasive darkness clouding our country there are often personal struggles that cast a shadow of discouragement upon us personally. Some are struggling financially. Some are facing serious health issues. Others are totally clueless about their future. There are those who are battling to save their marriages. Divorce, out of wedlock pregnancy, and a host of other issues are faced by so many. The darkness seems to be winning out. God has some very pertinent and powerful words for His people who "walk in darkness and have no light" (Is.50:10). "Who is among you that fears the Lord, That obeys the voice of His servant, That walks in darkness and has no light?" (Is.50:10a). Individual Believers (those who fear and obey the Lord) living in a dark world where wickedness reigns or who are overwhelmed by the darkness of their circumstances without hope are addressed. Listen to God's encouragement, "Let him trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God" (Is.50:10b). Wonderful words of comfort and confidence. God is in Control. "Though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet."

A Wedding Invitation

The Psalmist calls on us to "give thanks to the Lord for He is good and His lovingkindness endures forever" (Ps.107:1). While there are so many demonstrations of God's loyal love, none compares with the sacrifice of His Son on the Cross. God spoke of His Son's work through Isaiah, "I will also make You (His Servant Jesus) a light to the nations, So that My salvation may reach to the ends of the earth" (Is.49:8). That means God's Salvation through faith in Christ is made available throughout the world and that means to me and to everyone else who turns from their sin and trusts Christ. Salvation from sin is NOT the exclusive privilege of any particular group of people. The blessedness of God's lovingkindness found in Christ culminates in Revelation 19 where we are reminded in what may be the "last Beatitude", "How Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb" (Rev.19:9). Everyone who turns from their sin to trust in the "Light of the World" (Jesus) will know God's lovingkindness and receive their invitation. That is Very Good News Indeed.

Grateful for God's Grace

Psalm 106 chronicles the history of Israel's rebellion-- "quickly forgot His works, became envious of Moses, forgot God their Savior, despised the pleasant land, grumbled in their tents, did not listen to the voice of the Lord. Despite persistent and prominent rebellion we read a declaration of God's compassion, "He also made them objects of compassion..." (106:46a). I am humbled by God's compassion despite their rebellion and I'm asking the Lord to remind to be grateful for His compassion in light of my corruption. So grateful for "Grace that is greater than all my sin."

Loss of Liberty and Parental Responsibility

With so many questionable activities of the current administration coming to light these days--"Fast and Furious", "Benghazi", IRS targeting of conservative groups, NSA collection of emails and phone records, etc., some people are concerned over the threat to liberty and the concern for a lack of integrity, justice, and honesty within our government. All of these are legitimate concerns. One area where the loss of liberty and an attack on parental authority has been brewing and is now surfacing is in Health Care. When HHS secretary Kathleen Sabelius mandated contraceptive coverage for all employees she single-handedly stripped the religious liberties of millions of Christians, Mormons, Jews, and conscientious people in this country who do not believe in contraception and/or the use of abortion inducing drugs. The Federal government told people what they had to believe and how they had to behave and stripped their freedom of religious expression. Every single American is impacted by this ruling. Certainly the Catholic Church with all her institutions (hospitals, schools, churches, and charities) is being asked to support something that has been against her practices for centuries. Certainly Christians who are the owners of businesses are being asked to violate their religious consciences to pay for birth control (i.e. Hobby Lobby). But every individual who opposes the use of birth control and/or abortion inducing drugs who purchases his/her own health insurance will also certainly be paying for what they, in good conscience, believe is wrong. But the over-reach has extended even further. I'm not ignorant of the fact that under certain medical conditions unrelated to pregnancy contraceptives can be prescribed. I believe that most medical insurance plans will cover prescription medicines for these medicinal purposes. I am not willing to declare pregnancy as a medical condition. Pregnancy is a blessing, a privilege, and a choice. Movement has been afoot to make access to birth control and abortion inducing drugs available for any female of any age WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION. In one fell swoop the politically correct police have mandated that any girl of any age is now able to have access to birth control without her parents or doctor even knowing about it. This is an unacceptable over-reach on the part of the government to promote an agenda that is neither pro-family nor pro-life. With the gruesome and grizzly activity of Kermit Gosnell's abortion factory still in our minds it is amazing how society can just turn a blind eye to the taking of innocent life and then add to that the stripping away of parental authority. I am deeply saddened as I see the hypocrisy of those who cry out that gun control is necessary to protect the innocent children while promoting policies, procedures, and medications that are designed to take innocent life. There is virtually NO concern for the children, for life, or for what is right, but merely the propagation of their own political agenda at whatever cost. If certain people can use the tragic loss of life at Newtown to create a crisis they think will make the majority of Americans sympathetic to giving up their second amendment rights, then they will do so. If these same people believe that "abortion is a right" and the "government knows better than parents" then they will manipulate, maneuver, and dictate their way. Such activity indicates a callous disregard for life, arrogance (they know what is best), and that a deep spiritual vacuum exists within our country. All of these realities grieve me. All of these realities should grieve each of us. It is way past time to pray and promote the truth. I've included an article that explains the recent court ruling that gives access to contraception and strips parental authority. http://www.foxnews.com/health/2013/06/05/dr-manny-government-must-stop-bamboozling-americans-about-plan-b/

Giving Helps us Fear God

When instructing His people in the area of giving in the Old Testament God gave them this reason for faithful giving, "in order that you may learn to fear the Lord your God always" (Deut.14:23). Obedience in giving leads to Reverence towards God. They gave a tenth of all their produce as an act of faith and obedience which brought them to a deeper realization of their dependence upon God. As God continued to supply their needs as they gave to Him first, they also learned of God's faithfulness and grew in their Reverence towards Him. Not surprisingly it works the same way today.

Why Short-Term Missions

Since we have several folks from the church heading out on short-term missions this summer I thought it would be appropriate to share some Biblical perspective on Why Short-Term Missions. Why short term missions? WHY SHORT-TERM TEAMS? As we contemplate the possibilities before us—supporting more than one overseas short-term team for the third straight year I’ve been doing some thinking about why we would say “yes” and why we might say “no”. Why say no? I think the number one reason for reluctance is resources. Regardless of how the discussion is framed the bottom line is the bottom line when it comes to influencing our decisions. There is no doubt that financially supporting a number of individuals on overseas projects is costly ($2,000-$3,000 per person). Spending $20-$30 thousand dollars on short-term projects is a lot of money. Stateside projects seem to offer more “bang for the buck.” There is concern that repeated requests by our own people for support, amounts to putting a guilt trip on members of the church who find it much more difficult to say no to the people they worship with than to say no to a total stranger. It does cost a lot of money and we don’t want to presume upon our people or assume that they would or should give every year to these projects. But there are great blessings for both those who go and those who give. I believe that the benefits far outweigh the costs. Why say yes? First of all, we are commanded to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…” (Mt. 28:19). Obviously this doesn’t necessitate an overseas project but those opportunities do give us a chance to obey this command. As we have sent people to Brazil to work in the orphanage we have incarnated James 1:27. When we are sharing the gospel in Hungary we put feet on 2Cor. 5:17-21 as we become ambassadors for Christ urging lost people to be reconciled to God. In both locations we are able to demonstrate the love of Christ to our brothers and sisters in Christ (1Jn. 4:7-8). Secondly, These projects provide us with a unique way to stretch our faith and they call for sacrificial service that deepens our walk with God in unprecedented ways. Through these opportunities we are forced to step way out of our comfort zone and to rely upon God to work in us and through us if anything of eternal consequence is to happen. They provide us with a chance to lose our lives to find them (Mt.10:39), to truly give up our rights, to humble ourselves and learn submission and dependence upon God that we rarely embrace here in the states. I can’t think of anything that has caused our people to rely more upon the power of God than our short-term overseas trips. These trips help keep us from becoming complacent and they keep us in touch with the truth of Hebrews 11:6. Thirdly, they provide an excellent training ground for developing servant leaders who learn to live by faith. Those who go come back excited about continuing to live a life of faith, serving in ministry that keeps them dependent upon God. Fourthly, these projects enlarge our ministry vision as a church by exposing us to what God can and is doing around the world. Fifthly, they serve to develop unity among the body as we mobilize our energy towards kingdom significant ministry rather than focusing on insignificant minutia at home. As far as the money is concerned I will not argue that it is expensive to send people on short-term assignments overseas. But I want us to remember a few principles. Luke 6:38 reminds us that we cannot out give God. 1Timothy 6:17-19 calls us to lay up for ourselves a firm foundation for the coming age through giving. We have been blessed and we are blessed when we give to the Lord’s work. We have the resources so we can go and therefore we should go and do something of kingdom significance and not just out of selfish interest. I believe the financial end is another area in which we can stretch our faith and see God come through. The past two years we haven’t missed a beat in meeting our mission’s budget—God is faithful. I believe we can trust God to continue to provide. I think it is helpful to remember that God will always finance His will. Additionally, our investment pays dividends among those we minister alongside. Our ministry results in follow-up opportunities for new Christians and struggling believers, the encouragement of believers in the countries we visit (especially the missionary staff), and financial support given to the ministries through short-term support raised (Every International Messengers short-term missionaries contributes a minimum of $500 to the overall ministries of IM). Recently Ben Oehler who has served in the Ukraine for nearly 10 years told us that one short-term team can accomplish more by way of evangelism and discipleship than his many years in that country. That may be an exaggeration but it is certainly true that working together the national missionary and the short-term missionary can accomplish significantly more than either by themselves. Conclusion: God has been so good to us and we’ve seen Him do some amazing things in the lives of our people and in the lives of those we’ve been privileged to minister to and with on several short-term mission projects. Since we’ve taken deliberate steps as a church to send more people on short-term missions God has done great things. My prayer is that we will continue to press ahead in short-term missions for the glory of God and the gain of His kingdom. I want to urge you as individuals or couples to give financially to the mission fund so we can fulfill our church obligation of $750 to each of our adult short-term team members going out this summer. If some feel lead to give to a specific team or a particular team member that would be great. I can’t emphasize enough the need we have for people to pray for the team members going out to Brazil, Hungary and to Rosebud this summer. May Psalm 67:1-4a become our prayer as a church and may we do our part. Sincerely, Pastor Steve
